Protecting Your Kids On The Internet

Content Filtering

After reviewing several different software programs for filtering web content, we found that most have similar features such as: filtering out inappropriate web sites and content, monitoring the sites visited by keeping a log, and time spent on-line.  You can also customize these programs by setting up different settings for each user.  There are lists of approved sites that your child may visit and you may add sites to this list or chose to add words or phrases that you find inappropriate and wish to not be viewed.   These are accessed through a parental control option with a password.  The following are a few software programs with the above features.

Netnanny
www.netnanny.com          ($39.95 program with no subscription fees / free trial)

Cyberpatrol
www.cyberpatrol.com
($49.95 program includes 12 mo. subscription, $49.95 each additional year subscription / free trial)

Cybersitter
www.cybersitter.com         ($39.95 program with no subscription fees / free trial)

Content Monitoring
The following program from Lighthouse monitors where your child has been and keeps a log, but does not block inappropriate material or web sites. Thus giving you information on where your child has gone. Only by knowing what you child has viewed this can you protect your child and communicate with them.

There is even an email profanity filter or you can block email all together.  They can also send messages back and forth with parent-approved friends.  This is a downloadable browser with a $5.95 fee for families of  3 children and an additional fee for more than 3.
