NORTH SALEM CHURCH COUNCIL
June 3, 2009

North Salem Church Council met on Wednesday, June 3 at 7:30 pm. with the following in attendance: Denise Orwick, Pat Dickey, Paul Baum, Beth McDermott, Lynn Stilwell, Darlene Mooney, Michelle Ohler, Bill Schmidt, Dennis Kimmel, June Eier, Lyle Weaver, Pastor Julianne and Pastor Andrea. Pat read a poem by Helen Steiner Rice for the devotions.The secretary’s minutes were read by Darlene. Michelle went over the treasurer’s report and Darlene also gave a report on the misc funds from Rodney. Bill made a motion to accept all the reports. Denny seconded the motion and the motion carried.

Pastor’s reports and dates of interest – May 3 was First Communion Sunday. May 15 & 16 were the Synod Assembly dates. 2009 is the “Year of the Parent”. Denny made a motion to support the year of the Parent in September of this year. The motion was seconded by Denise and the motion carried. On May 17 there was a special congregation meeting to vote on the call for Pastor Joe.  June 14 will be a new member Sunday. A motion was made to accept the new members of Taya Ebert, Kaleb Nickleson, Braeden Nickleson, Sydney Ebert, Gage Ebert, Jason Rohlf, Rod Ohler and Katie Billeg. This motion was made by June, seconded by Pat and the motion carried. Gage Ebert will also be baptized on this Sunday. June 30 will be Pastor Andrea’s last day of service to LIFE. A reception in her honor is being planned. The LIFE Board met and elected officers. The finances for LIFE will be switched on July 1 to the LIFE Financial Committee to pay the pastors. A recommendation was made by Bill to use the accounting firm of Mizeckmiller from month to month to work with the financial committee to take control of the finances. Denny seconded the motion and the motion carried. The logo (LIFE with the cross) was the winner created by Bonnie Wolf.

Committees – The only committee that has met recently was the Education. There will be no children’s Sunday School, but there will be a children’s church for those under 5th grade. Under worship there was discussion on finding an organist. Also under property a motion was made to purchase a new toilet in the women’s restroom was made by Denny. The motion was seconded by Michelle and the motion carried.

Old Business – Locking church and turning off lights for the month of June is Pat. Sound System update: A motion was made by June to purchase a new head mic and to have the funds come out of the building fund. Bill seconded the motion and the motion carried. The parsonage roof was discussed. A motion was made by June to proceed with the roofing project at the parsonage. Shingles will be purchased and volunteers will be needed to put the shingles on. Lynn seconded the motion and the motion carried.

New Business – Pastor Joe Trestor accepted the call to become the Senior Pastor for LIFE. His starting date will be July 15. Michelle made a motion to change the Grace Matters under Mission Outreach to St. Paul’s Radio Ministry to receive the amount budgeted as Grace Matters no longer exists. Denny seconded the motion and the motion carried. Denny explained the new application that will be filled out for the Kenneth Memorial Scholarship Fund. The parking lot was prayed on May 31. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, July 1 at 7:30 pm. at North Salem with Bill leading the devotions. All present closed with the Lord’s Prayer.    D. Mooney, Secy.

The North Salem Church council met on Wednesday, May 6 at 7:30 pm. at the church with the following in attendance: Denise Orwick, Pat Dickey, President Beth McDermott, Paul Baum, Lynn Stilwell, Darlene Mooney, Michelle Ohler, June Eier, Pastor Andrea Starn and Pastor Julianne Smith. Those unable to attend were Bill Schmidt, Rodney Lieb, and Lyle Weaver. The devotions were given by Darlene.

The April minutes were read by Darlene. The treasurer’s report was gone over by Michelle. Total income was $14,274.08 (past LIP income form St. Paul and First Lutheran is included). Expenses were $15, 261.05 (a big part of this is salary, housing and pension for both LIFE Interim pastors). The special funds were not reported. After some questions and discussion, Paul made a motion to except all of the reports. June seconded the motion and the motion carried.

Pastor’s reports – Pastor Andrea thanked everyone involved in any way with all the services and gatherings throughout the Lenten and Easter seasons. The nursing home visits are continuing. There will be First Communion at all 3 churches on May 3. There may be another first communion class in June. The names of Nick Koehler, Kolby Holloway, Adam Conley and Austen Goodman were presented to the council to be approved for confirmation on May 31. Denise made a motion to accept these young people for their affirmation of baptism into North Salem Lutheran Church. Pat seconded the motion and the motion carried. Pastor Andrea reported on two upcoming weddings at North Salem. June 27 – Matt Koehler and July 25 – Katie Billeg. Two LIFE Programming Events were announced for July and August: Dogs & Ice Cream Event at St. Paul’s on July 12 starting at 4:30 pm. Pasty at the Pond (C R Photos pond) on August 9 from 2:00 pm. til dark. Pastor Julianne reported that her daughter, Sarah was married at North Salem the previous week. Also she brought up that the LIFE Board is looking into to doing meals for the community.

Committees reported on items even though none have met recently. It was brought to the councils attention that there is no ELW Altar Edition for the Pastor us use on Sundays. Discussion followed and it was decided to use memorial money in memory of Dennis Orwick (suggested by Denise) to purchase this book. Michelle reported that there is still spring cleaning projects to be completed. The list is on the bulletin board. Denise reported that the Lenten challenge brought in $386.00 to the church.

Old Business – Denise will be in charge of turning off lights and locking doors for the month of May. Marilyn Lee turned in an estimate to have the organ repaired for $1000.00. After some discussion a motion was made by Pat to have an “organ donors” fund set up for the repairs and to use money from the building fund to cover the remaining amount that is not collected in the fund. Denise seconded the motion and the motion carried. Beth gave a report for Denny who had Sound Systems from Tiffin come and check out the speaker system. They left a new head mic for us to try.

New Business – A discussion was held on what rates should be charged for usage of North Salem by St. Paul and First Lutheran. A motion was made by Paul to charge North Salem rates to our LIFE  congregation members of First Lutheran and St. Paul. June seconded the motion and motion carried.

Upcoming dates to remember – Thursday, May 7 – LIFE Finance Committee will meet. The 3 on the committee are: Russell Lee from North Salem, Larry Bennett from First Lutheran and Jill Logsdon from St. Paul. Friday, May 8 – Gathering with Pastor Joe Trester at 7:00 pm. at First Lutheran. Each council member is to bring 2 doz. Finger food desserts. Sunday, May 17 – LIFE Congregations to vote to call Pastor Joe and also to vote on the compensation package. Wednesday, June 3 – North Salem Church Council at 7:30 pm. Pat will have devotions. Confirmation Camp – June 14-19, and VB School at First Lutheran, June 22-26.


SPECIAL CONGREGATION MEETING
Sunday, May 17

President Beth McDermott opened the meeting by explaining the purpose of the meeting. Rodney Lieb made a motion to proceed with the vote to extend a call to Pastor Joe Trester. Bill Schmidt seconded the motion and motion carried. A motion was then made by Denise Orwick to extend the call to Pastor Joe Trester. Arden Mittermaier seconded the motion and the motion carried. The call committee came forward and expressed their opinions. After some questions and discussion the congregation proceeded to vote. The vote passed with a 57 yes vote and 0 no vote. Information on the compensation package was then passed out by Michelle Ohler. Beth went over items and Pastor Cathy Schibler also explained some items and answered questions. Arden made a motion to accept the compensation package as presented and to vote on it. Bill seconded the motion and motion carried. The vote passed with a 55 yes vote and 0 no vote. Pastor Schibler made comments on  what comes next. Motion was made by Lynn Stilwell to close the meeting. Paul Baum seconded the motion and motion carried. Beth closed with prayer.

NORTH SALEM CHURCH COUNCIL
Wednesday, April 1, 2009

North Salem Church council met on Wednesday, April 1 after the Lenten Service at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Those in attendance were Paul Baum, Pat Dickey, President Beth McDermott, Lynn Stilwell, Rodney Lieb, Darlene Mooney, Michelle Ohler, Denny Kimmel, June Eier and Pastor Julianne. Those not in attendance were Denise Orwick, Bill Schmidt, Lyle Weaver and Pastor Andrea. Pastor Julianne opened with prayer.

The secretary’s report was read by Darlene. Motion to accept was made by Rodney, seconded by Lynn and motion carried. Michelle gave the treasurer’s report and Rodney reported no change in the special accounts. Denny made a motion to accept the report, Lynn seconded and motion carried.

Pastor Julianne reported that we are in the second month of rotation and hopefully everyone is getting more comfortable with it. LIFE Bowling Event was well attended and everyone really enjoyed themselves. The youth have been meeting to get ready for the gathering in New Orleans on July 22-26. In the first weekend in May there will be Leadership Workshops thru the synod.

Committees –
Property: List will need to be made up for the clean up days on April 15 and 18. It was reported there was a water leak in the church office. Also there was a request to have a railing put on the building by the south Sunday School entry door.
Evangelism: Reported on a Salem Township Committee gathering to plan something at St. Joe’s.

Old Business –
Lyle will be responsible for turning off lights and locking doors. Feedback was given on the Tri-Council meeting that was held on March 14. There will be an Easter Sunday breakfast at North Salem starting at 7:30 am. to benefit the youth. The finance person for LIFE from North Salem will be Russell Lee. There will be a second interview with one of the Sr. Pastoral candidates on Saturday, April 18 at First Lutheran starting at 9:30 am. with a potluck brunch to follow. The noodle making day produced $511.00 plus $300.00 matching funds for the youth.

New Business –
Confirmation dates for all three churches are as follows: St. Paul on April 26, First Lutheran on May 10 and North Salem on May 31. It was suggested that the organ at North Salem needed a tune-up. An estimate will be turned in from Gromans. A request was made by the Dave Smith family to use the church basement on Easter for their gathering. It was OK’d and they understand the fees for usage. Also there was discussion on the sound system at church. Denny will look into having someone check it. Services for the rest of the Lenten and Easter season were gone over.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, May 6 at 7:30 pm. with Darlene having the devotions. All closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

North Salem Church Council
March 4, 2009

North Salem Church Council met after the midweek Lenten Worship at First Lutheran Church. Those present were Paul Baum, Denise Orwick, Lynn Stillwell, Pres. Beth McDermott, June Eier, Darlene Mooney, Michelle Ohler, Denny Kimmel, Pat Dickey, Lyle Weaver, Pastor Andrea and Pastor Julianne. Unable to attend were Rodney Lieb and Bill Schmidt. Prayer was offered by Pastor Julianne.

The minutes were read from the February meeting. Denise made a motion to accept the report. Paul seconded and the motion carried. Michelle gave the treasurer’s report. The reports on the special funds were not available. Denny made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report. Pat seconded and motion carried.

Pastor’s reports –
The Mardi Graus that was held at St. Paul’s last month brought in $1200.00 for the youth going to the Gathering. This included $300.00 matching funds from Thrivent. The Bishop’s Conferences last month were well attended. Ash Wednesday services were held at 7:00  to 11:00 am. (every ½ hour) at St. Paul. Also evening services were held at North Salem and First Lutheran at 7:00 pm. The rest of the Lenten service schedule is as follows: March 11 at First Lutheran, March 18 and 25 at North Salem, April 1 and April 9 (Maundy Thursday) at St. Paul. Services will start at 7:00 pm. with a meal before each from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. Good Friday service at North Salem at 7:00 pm. Easter Vigil service at First Lutheran at 5:30 pm. with Pastor Andrea officiating. Easter services are Sunrise service at St. Paul at 7:00 am., 9:00 am. at North Salem with Pastor Julianne, 10:00 am. at St. Paul with Pastor Andrea, and 11:00 am. at First Lutheran with Pastor Julianne. There will be a Tri-Council meeting with the LIFE Board, CMB Programming Committee and the Call Committee at the Community Library if the attendance isn’t too large otherwise another place will be announced. The meeting time for this gathering is from 9:00 to 11:30 am. March 15 LIFE Bowling Event at Wyandot Lanes from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. There will be a drive-thru Pulled Pork Dinner at First Lutheran on March 17 to benefit the youth. Also another money making event for the youth will be on March 21 at North Salem with a Noodle Making Day. On March 22 there will be a high school movie night at St. Paul’s from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. May 31 will be Confirmation Sunday at North Salem.

Committee Reports –
Education Committee met on March 1 after worship. Russell Lee will be teaching the Confirmation class since Pastor Andrea now has other responsibilities. Other teaching positions and times were discussed. Property Committee reported that the parsonage was cleaned for the Open House. Stewardship Committee stated that there is a poster up for a Lenten Challenge. Shut-ins have been visited and communed.

Old Business –
Lynn will be in charge of locking church and turning off lights for March. The attendance at the tours of the churches and parsonages was reported on. Not too many visited the churches, but there was more who toured the parsonages. Council asked that a notice be put in the bulletin to try and sell the extra copier the church has for $300.00 or best offer.

New Business –
Spring Clean Up at North Salem will be on Wednesday, April 15 starting at 1:00 pm. and on Saturday, April 18 starting at 9:00 am. to late afternoon. Come when you can on either of these two dates. There has been 3 interviews set for candidates for the Sr. Pastor position in the month of March. A 4th candidate’s papers will be coming in. Discussion was held on expenses for the chaperones that are going to the youth gathering. A motion was made by Denny to have the balance needed by the chaperones (which was $550.00) be taken out of the memorial fund. Pat seconded the motion and motion carried.

The next council meeting will be on Wednesday, April 1 after the Lenten worship at St. Paul’s around 7:45 pm. All closed with the Lord’s Prayer.
