Pentecost
Descending Dove

The descending dove, made of white polyester fabric stuffed with fiberfill to give an added dimension, symbolizes the coming of the Holy Spirit just as He descended in the form of a dove at the baptism of Jesus.  The flame is often uses as a Pentecost symbol reminding us of the outpouring  of the Holy Spirit in the form of the tongues of fire which rested on the apostles' heads that first Pentecost. The seven flames, in three shades of orange to red felt, are often used to represent the seven-fold gifts of the Spirit mentioned in Isaiah 11 and in the Confirmation benediction used at Confirmation.  The lettering is done in red felt, the color for Pentecost.  The flames and dove are edged in gold cording and penetrates and indwells the lives of Christians everywhere, manifesting Himself through the Word and Sacraments for each of us as we say, "come, Holy Spirit."
