Purple, the color for penitence, is used for the background of this Lenton banner.  The Latin cross, in blue felt outlined in white braid, is the actual form of the cross upon which Christ was crucified.  The letters, made of gold metalic material - I.N.R.I.  These letters indicate the Latin inscription, "Jesus of the Nazareth, King of the Jews."  (John 19:19)  The crown of thorns, a mockery crown, symbolizes humiliation and suffering, imposed upon Jesus.  The white cloth draped over the cross symolized the robe worn by Jesus.  The red on the white cloth symbolizes the blood of Christ shed for us.
