Reformation Banner
The Truth Will Make You Free..Really Free!
This banner for Reformation Sunday is made on red upholstery for the
day on which we remember the events which led to the formation of our Lutheran
Church. Red has traditionally been the color for church festivals.
Here it also brings to mind the faith and courage of those early reformers.
The open bible of white felt on black symbolizes the Word of God.
The Bible is shown open because Martin Luther emphasized the reading of
the bible by the common people. The Lamp of a gold metallic material
is another symbol for the Word of God probably coming from "Thy word is
a lamp unto my feet." Psalm 119:105. It has become a symbol of Christian
knowledge of the truth. Thus the wording of black felt, "The Truth
Will Make You Free." Together the lamp and the open Bible represent
the knowledge and wisdom which comes to us through studying the Word of
God. The dove of a silver metallic material signifies the Holy spirit
and the presence of God which come to us through the reading of His Word.
The chains of black felt along the bottom of the banner represent the blackness
of sin to which we were once enslaved but from which Christ has set us
free with his death, and released us from the burden of the law.
Truly we can shout, "Really Free!" (of black letters for contrast.)
The banner is completed with gold fringe.
